On August 28, 2024, 88-year-old María Teresa Contreras Herrera was fatally shot while asleep in her Burien, Washington, home. Known affectionately as "Gramita," she was the heart of a large family, including six children, 24 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. At the time of the incident, 14 family members were present in the house, among them two children and a pregnant woman.
