On February 27, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in New Richmond, Ohio, resulting in the death of Steven Michael Cain, age 50, along with three other family members. The Clermont County Sheriff's Office responded to a civil service call at a home on the 1100 block of Riebel Ridge. As deputies approached the residence, they heard multiple gunshots from inside.
Upon entering the home, law enforcement discovered five gunshot victims, four of whom were already deceased.
The deceased were identified as Steven Cain (50), Theresa Cain (46), William Felton (74), and Ethan Cain (13). Samantha Cain (20), Steven's daughter and an NKU student, was found critically injured but alive.
Initially, the circumstances surrounding the deaths were unclear. However, following an investigation based on physical evidence, autopsy reports, and the positioning of the bodies at the crime scene, the Clermont County Sheriff's Office determined that Theresa Cain, Steven's wife, was responsible for the shootings.
According to the sheriff's office, 46-year-old Theresa Cain fatally shot her husband Steven Cain, William Felton, and her son Ethan Cain before turning the gun on herself. This incident has been classified as a murder-suicide.
No arrests were made in connection with this case, as the perpetrator, Theresa Cain, was among the deceased. The investigation revealed no signs of forced entry into the home, and authorities confirmed there was no ongoing search for suspects.
Steven Cain was known locally as the lead singer of the Ohio-based thrash metal band Critical Khaos. Originally from Augusta, Georgia, he had moved to the Cincinnati area in 2015 and worked in safety and environmental management at an R&D facility. He was also an author, having written 13 poetry and short story books and a horror novel.
The tragedy has deeply affected the New Richmond community, with the local school superintendent describing the community as "crushed" by the loss. The incident has left many questions unanswered, as friends and neighbors reported no prior indications of trouble within the family.
