On July 9, 2023, at approximately 2:49 a.m., Toledo police responded to reports of a shooting in the 700 block of North Michigan Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 35-year-old Deon Walter Huntley suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to St. Vincent Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Lucas County Coroner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest, ruling the incident a homicide.
Investigators found shell casings at the intersections of Michigan Street and Dove Lane, as well as in the 800 block of Walnut Street, indicating multiple shots were fired. Despite these findings, no arrests have been made, and the identities of any potential suspects remain unknown. The Toledo Police Department continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
Deon Huntley was born on December 13, 1987, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Walter D. Huntley and Carla Murray. He attended Woodward High School and later earned his GED, pursuing some college education. Known for his infectious laugh and love for family gatherings, Deon was a devoted father to his children: Anaya, Deon Jr., Keon, Amyrah, Armyrie, A'sani, and DaKyng. He enjoyed watching football, especially the Raiders, playing basketball, and engaging in card games with family and friends. His family remembers him as a gentle giant who was an excellent father and a great provider.
As of now, the investigation into Deon's death is ongoing. Authorities have not provided updates regarding suspects or arrests. The community and family continue to seek justice for Deon, hoping that those responsible will be held accountable.
