On August 3, 2023, Marquise Banks, a 23-year-old resident of Green, Ohio, was fatally shot during an incident on Interstate 77. The shooting occurred when a passenger in a pickup truck fired multiple rounds at Banks' Lincoln SUV. Following the gunfire, Banks lost control of his vehicle, which veered across the median and collided with a Mercedes in the northbound lanes. Despite being rushed to Summa Akron City Hospital, Banks was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The driver of the Mercedes sustained unspecified injuries as a result of the crash.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities launched an investigation that led to the identification of Sirvonte Suggs, an 18-year-old from Akron, as a suspect. It was revealed that Suggs and Banks had been involved in an ongoing dispute prior to the incident. On December 11, 2023, Suggs was arrested at a residence in Akron and subsequently charged with aggravated murder. During the arrest, law enforcement officials also discovered suspected drugs and ammunition at the location. Suggs made his initial court appearance shortly thereafter, where his bond was set at $1 million.
Further developments in the case included the arrest of another suspect, Giovanni D. Porter, a 23-year-old from Carrollton, Texas. Porter has also been charged with murder in connection to Banks' death. As investigations continue, both Suggs and Porter are facing serious charges related to this tragic event. The case has been bound over to a Summit County Grand Jury for further proceedings, with additional charges anticipated as more information comes to light.
