On August 30, 2023, Brandon Tyler Welsh, a 32-year-old resident of Eaton, Ohio, was found dead in the parking lot of Angstrom Fiber in Sidney, Ohio. The Sidney Police Department received a call at approximately 11:22 AM regarding a man down. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Welsh had succumbed to a gunshot wound. The incident appears to have stemmed from a road rage altercation between Welsh and another semi-truck driver, Lashawn Dean Hughes, aged 48, from Greensboro, North Carolina.
Both men were operating their trucks on Interstate 75 prior to the confrontation.
The altercation escalated after a minor accident involving both trucks. Following the incident on the highway, Welsh pursued Hughes for several miles until Hughes exited the interstate and parked his truck at Angstrom Fiber. Witnesses reported that Welsh approached Hughes' vehicle, but details surrounding the confrontation remain unclear. Shortly after the encounter, Hughes fled the scene in his semi-truck. He was later apprehended by police in Anna, Ohio, where he was arrested and charged with murder.
Lashawn Dean Hughes was subsequently charged with one count of murder and is currently incarcerated at Shelby County Jail. The investigation revealed that Hughes had a prior murder conviction and was prohibited from possessing a firearm. During the trial proceedings, Hughes claimed he acted in self-defense, asserting that Welsh had become aggressive and attempted to pull him from his truck. However, evidence presented during the trial contradicted this claim, including dash cam footage showing Welsh unarmed at the time of the shooting.
In September 2024, Hughes was found guilty of murder and other charges related to the incident. He received an indefinite sentence of 23 years to life in prison for his actions. The case has drawn attention not only for its tragic outcome but also for highlighting issues related to road rage and gun violence among commercial drivers.
