In December 2020, the quiet community of Westminster, Maryland, was unsettled by a fatal shooting that occurred within a family home. On a Saturday afternoon, Carroll County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a residence on Marydell Drive following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 49-year-old Stephen Hartman suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.
Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel who rendered aid at the scene, Stephen Hartman was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly focused on a suspect who was present at the home. Authorities identified the shooter as the victim's own son, 21-year-old Lucas Hartman. Investigators determined that Lucas had shot his father multiple times with a 9mm firearm. Following the incident, Lucas Hartman was taken into custody by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.
Lucas Hartman faced serious charges in connection with his father's death, including first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. In the course of the legal proceedings, he claimed that the shooting was an act of protection for his mother from alleged abuse. However, the prosecution contested this claim, stating that the accusations of abuse were unsubstantiated. Ultimately, Lucas Alexander Hartman pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree murder. In May 2022, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the killing of his father.
