The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. after a friend of Matos discovered their bodies and called 911. Matos was found shot in the kitchen, while Chapple was found in the bedroom.
Authorities believe that the suspect or suspects entered the apartment without any signs of forced entry, making it likely that they knew the victims. The police suspect that the crime may have been linked to Matos’s involvement in drug activities from the apartment.
Kelli Chapple, who had moved to Jacksonville earlier that year from New York, had met Matos only about a month before their deaths. He suspects that the perpetrators wanted to eliminate any witnesses, which tragically led to his daughter’s death. Bernard Chapple vividly recalls the heartbreak of learning about his daughter’s murder after seeing a news report and then receiving a call from her coworker, who had seen police presence outside Matos' apartment. Since then, the pain has been constant for Chapple as he continues to seek answers about what happened that day.
Despite the initial investigation, no suspects have been apprehended, and the case remains unsolved. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office continues to appeal for any information that might help in solving this case, urging community members to come forward. The families of both Matos and Chapple have been left searching for justice, hoping that someone who knows what happened will eventually provide the missing information that could solve this tragic double homicide.
