On May 18, 2013, Anthony Stinson Jr., a 20-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, was tragically shot and killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting his grandmother. As he was leaving her house in the late afternoon, he was struck multiple times in the back. The police arrived at the scene and rushed him to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
This tragedy occurred just a few weeks before his 21st birthday, and to this day, the case remains unsolved, leaving his family and friends without closure.
Anthony was well-loved by those who knew him. He had a bright personality, often making those around him laugh, and was affectionately nicknamed "Ham" because of his large size as a baby. He grew up in Jacksonville, attending Andrew Jackson High School where he played varsity football, and later pursued his studies at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (Florida A&M). Stinson was remembered as a caring individual who was dedicated to his education, athletics, and community. His father recalls fond memories of their shared times at sporting events, concerts, and movies. Anthony Jr. had a deep bond with his mother Elnora, and he often helped others whenever he could.
In response to this tragedy, Anthony Stinson Sr., Anthony's father, took an active role in trying to prevent further violence in the community. He founded The Anthony J. Stinson Jr. Association for Change, a nonprofit organization with the mission of ending violence among teenagers by promoting nonviolent conflict resolution. The nonprofit provides children aged 7 to 17 with a safe space for after-school activities, tutoring, and community service. Stinson Sr.'s efforts are an attempt to make something positive come out of the family's loss and to ensure that other parents do not have to face similar heartbreak.
Despite the profound grief, Stinson Sr. has sought to make a difference in the Jacksonville community, collaborating with local organizations and initiatives like the Jacksonville Bar Association to foster peaceful, supportive environments for young people. His efforts include educational and mentorship programs aimed at reducing violence, showing that positive change is possible even in the face of devastating loss.
