On September 30, 2023, the body of 74-year-old Leroy Emmanuel Johnston Jr. was discovered in a remote wooded area near the Royalview Picnic Shelter at Mill Stream Run Reservation in Strongsville, Ohio. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Johnston, a resident of Shaker Heights, died from a gunshot wound to the head, ruling his death a homicide.
Following an extensive investigation, authorities arrested 22-year-old Viktor Vendler on May 28, 2024, in connection with Johnston's death. Investigators revealed that Vendler and Johnston were acquaintances and alleged that on September 24, 2023, Vendler lured Johnston to the park, where he fatally shot him before fleeing the scene.
A Cuyahoga County grand jury indicted Vendler on multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated murder, one count of kidnapping, one count of tampering with evidence, and one count of gross abuse of a corpse. During his arraignment, Vendler pleaded not guilty to all charges and was held on a $1 million bond. The court also ordered him to have no contact with Johnston's family.
The case remains under judicial proceedings as the community seeks justice for Johnston's tragic death.
