On November 5, 2023, 14-year-old Braylon Hardges was fatally shot near East 90th Street and Edmunds Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. as Braylon and 16-year-old Steven Sopko were leaving Sopko's girlfriend's residence. As they walked down the street, Sopko allowed Braylon to walk ahead before firing 12 shots into his back. After Braylon fell, Sopko leaned over and fired a final shot. Sopko then fled the scene, returning to his girlfriend's house.
Braylon was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Cleveland Police Department's Homicide Unit conducted an investigation, utilizing phone records, social media, and ballistic evidence to link Sopko to the crime. On January 4, 2024, Sopko was arrested by the U.S. Marshal’s Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. He was subsequently tried as an adult. On October 25, 2024, a jury found Sopko guilty of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, and two counts of felonious assault. On October 31, 2024, Judge Nancy Fuerst sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 31 years.
During the sentencing, Braylon's mother, Seaerra LeFlore, held her son's ashes in an urn as she delivered an emotional impact statement. She expressed profound grief over the loss of her son, emphasizing the potential and joy he brought to their lives. Judge Fuerst described the crime as "cruel and brutal," stating that the sentence aimed to protect the public and hold Sopko accountable for his actions. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, leaving Braylon's family and the community searching for answers.
