Allen Pierce-May, a 23-year-old resident of Youngstown, Ohio, was fatally shot on January 22, 2024. The incident occurred at the intersection of Erie Street and East Evergreen Avenue on the South Side of Youngstown. Pierce-May was rushed to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Youngstown Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide.
Their efforts led them to identify Jules Freeman, a 21-year-old man from New Philadelphia, as the primary suspect in the case. On January 31, 2024, Freeman turned himself in to the authorities and was subsequently charged with complicity to commit murder.
Further investigation revealed that the shooting may have been connected to a drug transaction. Text messages between Pierce-May and Freeman indicated that they had been planning a drug deal for January 22, the day of the shooting. Additionally, detectives found that Freeman had saved Pierce-May's address in his Google Maps application.
In February 2024, a grand jury indicted Jules Freeman on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises, felonious assault, and cocaine trafficking. Freeman's trial was scheduled for October 15, 2024.
As the case progressed, Freeman's legal team filed a notice in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on September 13, 2024, indicating their intention to argue self-defense at the trial. This motion was submitted to Judge Maureen Sweeney, who is overseeing the case. During a preliminary hearing in municipal court, Freeman's attorneys had previously hinted at a potential self-defense claim. The lead investigator in the case also reported that Freeman had claimed self-defense during an interview conducted in New Philadelphia.
