On the evening of January 26, 2024, in Steubenville, Ohio, 18-year-old Ja'Zeric Birden, affectionately known as "Choppy," was fatally shot during an altercation in the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue. Responding to reports of gunfire shortly after 9 p.m., officers discovered Birden deceased at the scene and another 18-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds; the latter was transported to a Pittsburgh-area hospital for treatment.
