On April 6, 2024, Larod Allen Delong, an 18-year-old from Dayton, Ohio, was shot and killed in a tragic incident that occurred around 6 a.m. in the 2400 block of Auburn Avenue. Upon arrival, police found Delong lying in the street, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Montgomery County Coroner's Office confirmed his identity shortly thereafter.
The shooting involved a suspect, Isaiah DeAnthony Wood, a 37-year-old man who was later arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including murder. Reports indicate that Wood fired more than 40 rounds from his residence after noticing two individuals attempting to break into his car. Doorbell camera footage captured the events leading up to the shooting, showing Wood exiting his home armed with a firearm. Tragically, one of the bullets struck Delong in the back of the head as he attempted to flee the scene.
Following the incident, Wood was taken into custody and held on a $1 million bail. He faced various charges, including two counts of murder and several counts related to weapon offenses. During the investigation, authorities discovered four firearms at Wood's home, including one believed to be used in the shooting, which had been altered.
As of late October 2024, a jury trial resulted in a hung verdict on several charges against Wood. While he was acquitted of tampering with evidence, jurors could not reach a consensus on the remaining charges related to Delong's death. A new trial is anticipated, although no specific court date has been set yet. The case remains a significant point of concern within the Dayton community as it highlights ongoing issues related to gun violence and public safety.
