Jacob James Derbin, a 23-year-old police officer from Euclid, Ohio, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on May 11, 2024. Officer Derbin, who had been with the Euclid Police Department for nine months, was responding to a disturbance call at a home on East 211th Street when he was ambushed by a gunman. The incident occurred just before 10 p.m., and despite being rushed to a local hospital, Derbin succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, a 24-year-old man who was wanted for a probation violation. Following the shooting, a manhunt was launched to apprehend Vaughn, who was described as "armed and extremely dangerous". The search came to an end on Sunday, May 12, 2024, when Vaughn was found dead after a standoff with police at an apartment complex in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner later announced that Vaughn had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Officer Derbin was a recent graduate of the Kent State University Police Academy and had served one tour of duty in Kuwait with the U.S. Army National Guard. He was engaged to be married in July 2024 and was described as a kindhearted, selfless individual with an enormous smile that always lit up a room. His untimely death occurred just as the law enforcement community was preparing to commemorate fallen officers during Police Memorial Week.
The incident has deeply affected the Euclid community and law enforcement agencies across Ohio. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost expressed his condolences and anger at the injustice, emphasizing the sacrifice made by officers who promise to protect their communities.
