Maurco Toler, a 13-year-old boy from Euclid, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed on December 11, 2021. He was visiting a friend on Zeman Avenue in Euclid when he became the victim of a drive-by shooting. The assailants, Duane Jackson and Leroy Anthony Billips, both high school students at the time, were inside a dark-colored Ford Escape when they fired shots, ultimately killing Maurco.
Nearly two years after the incident, Duane Jackson and Leroy Anthony Billips were found guilty of
murder, felonious assault, and other charges. They were both sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 32 years for Jackson and 25 years for Billips. The courtroom was filled with family and friends of both the victims and the perpetrators, with emotional testimonies from Toler's family members who shared memories of the young boy and expressed their pain since his death.
Despite the convictions, there is still one suspect at large, Javyonne Stewart, who is believed to have been involved in the shooting. The U.S. Marshals are actively searching for Stewart to bring him to justice. Maurco's mother, Anita Deal, has endured immense grief, having lost three sons to gun violence in just four years. She continues to advocate for justice and speaks out against the violence that has taken so many young lives.
