Kiara Nelson, an 18-year-old woman from Dublin, Ohio, tragically lost her life on June 22, 2024, in a shooting incident at the Karric Place of Dublin apartments on O'Sweeney Lane, located near Tuttle Crossing in northwest Columbus. The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. when Columbus police responded to a report of a shooting at the apartment complex.
Upon arrival, officers found Nelson suffering from gunshot wounds inside one of the apartments.
She was immediately transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead just before 2 a.m.. The shooting reportedly stemmed from a domestic dispute between two individuals inside the apartment. Nelson, attempting to intervene in the altercation, was struck by a bullet.
In the days following the incident, law enforcement identified and arrested a suspect in connection with Nelson's death. Mika Lee Cannon, a 22-year-old man, was charged with murder for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting. Court records indicate that Cannon was seen hurriedly leaving the apartment after Nelson was shot.
Cannon appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on Wednesday, June 25, 2024, where a judge set his bond at $2 million. The arrest warrant for Cannon was issued based on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which authorities have characterized as a domestic violence incident. His next court appearance was scheduled for July 15, 2024.
The community at Karric Place Apartments expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing the area as typically quiet and tight-knit. Neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their disbelief and sorrow, stating they would have attempted to help had they been aware of the situation.
