On September 15, 2024, at approximately 2:57 p.m., Hamilton County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the 5900 block of East Miami River Road in Cleves, Ohio. Upon arrival, they discovered 33-year-old Joseph Ian Mathias Gladwell suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Western Ridge, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the incident, the Hamilton County Police Association’s SWAT Team assisted in searching a nearby property close to the scene of the homicide. Investigators did not immediately disclose information about a possible suspect or motive. However, witness statements and surveillance video eventually led authorities to identify 40-year-old David Vanover as the suspect. He was arrested during a traffic stop on September 18, 2024, and charged with aggravated murder. Prosecutors allege that Vanover used an AR-15-style rifle to shoot Gladwell and that the act was premeditated. During his court appearance, Vanover pleaded not guilty, and the judge set his bond at $1 million.
Joseph Gladwell, born on December 31, 1990, in Cincinnati, Ohio, was a mechanic by trade, known for his ability to repair and rejuvenate various items. He is survived by his parents, Timothy R. and Pamela J. Caldwell; his son, Landon Gladwell; and his siblings, Timothy Caldwell, Stephanie Gladwell, Alexis Caldwell, Tyler Caldwell, and Taylor Caldwell. Family and friends gathered to honor his memory during visitation on September 26, 2024, followed by interment at Batavia Union Cemetery the next day.
