Brianne Nicole Otley, a 34-year-old resident of Greenville, Ohio, tragically passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024. Born on June 19, 1990, in Dayton, Ohio, Brianne was a single mother of three children: Kayden Smith, Maryah Otley, and John Otley. She was a 2009 graduate of Northmont High School and had worked in various customer service positions in the area.
On the evening of September 26, 2024, the Greenville Police Department responded to a residence on Martin Street following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered Brianne Otley with a gunshot wound. Initially, no suspect was found at the scene, prompting authorities to advise neighbors to remain indoors while they conducted their search.
The suspect, identified as Zachary Gilbert, age 25, was apprehended around 10:30 p.m., several blocks north of the shooting location. Unfortunately, Brianne succumbed to her injuries. Following the incident, Gilbert was taken into custody and formally charged in connection with Brianne's death.
A Darke County Grand Jury indicted Zachary Gilbert on charges of homicide and evidence tampering. He was arraigned in Darke County Common Pleas Court for murder and tampering with evidence. As of the latest reports, Gilbert remains incarcerated and is scheduled to appear in court again on December 13, 2024.
The community mourned the loss of Brianne Otley, remembering her as a devoted mother who loved and adored her children. She was known for her enjoyment of shopping and her appreciation for tattoos and piercings. In the time leading up to her passing, Brianne had returned to church and was attending the Greenville Baptist Church.
A celebration of Brianne's life was held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Tribute Funeral Homes, Greenville Campus. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund was established at Fifth Third Bank to support her children, with donations made payable to Michelle Otley, Brianne's mother.
