On a summer evening in Belen, New Mexico, what began as a dispute over mail tragically escalated, ending the life of 45-year-old Lisa Lavonne Swift-Bird. The White / Caucasian woman was fatally shot on June 30, 2023, in the parking lot of a local Sonic restaurant following a heated argument.
The conflict reportedly arose when Swift-Bird and her fiancé went to a residence they had recently moved out of to pick up their mail.
An altercation ensued with Donald Lewis, the brother of Swift-Bird's fiancé, who still lived at the home. The argument spilled over to the nearby Sonic, where at around 7 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire. They arrived to find Swift-Bird with a gunshot wound to her chest. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene indicated that during the verbal dispute, Lewis shot Swift-Bird. Following the shooting, Lewis allegedly fled the scene but returned a short time later. He was then taken into custody by the Belen Police Department. Lewis claimed that Swift-Bird had been armed with a knife, an assertion that was not corroborated by other witnesses. Donald Lewis was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, and he was held at the Valencia County Detention Center without bond.
