On May 15, 2024, David Castillo, a 54-year-old resident of Hobbs, New Mexico, was fatally shot in a tragic incident that also claimed the life of another man, Felipe Castillo, aged 52. The Hobbs Police Department received a call around 11:16 PM regarding a medical emergency at a residence located on the 600 block of North McKinley Street. Upon arrival, officers found the front door open and discovered David Castillo suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the police and emergency medical services, both men succumbed to their injuries shortly after.
Following the incident, the Hobbs Police Department launched an investigation that lasted eight days. During this time, they sought information from the public and identified several persons of interest related to the case. Eventually, an arrest warrant was issued for 34-year-old David Rodriguez-Baeza, also known as 'Paps.' He was apprehended without incident and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of David and Felipe Castillo.
Rodriguez-Baeza has a significant criminal history that includes multiple probation and parole violations, as well as various charges ranging from drug possession to robbery. His extensive record raised concerns about his potential involvement in violent crimes.
