On November 1, 2024, David Ruiz, 46, of Bayard, New Mexico, was fatally shot in his residence. Earlier that day, around 2 p.m., the Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of shots fired on U.S. Highway 180 near milepost 119. A 54-year-old woman reported that her boyfriend, 61-year-old Anthony Aveles, had shot her while she was driving. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. Aveles fled the scene in a separate vehicle.
