Quinntrail Young, 34, a Black/African American man, was shot during the early-morning hours of April 9, 2023, at a house near 1806 Russell Avenue North in Minneapolis, where a gathering had drawn many people. Police were called just before 4:30 a.m. and found him outside the home with gunshot wounds; he was taken to North Memorial, where he was pronounced dead at 5:00 a.m. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. Early accounts described a confrontation at the gathering that escalated into gunfire.
Investigators later alleged the shooting arose out of a rivalry between neighborhood street gangs during a party attended by dozens to hundreds of people. According to charging documents reported at the time, after Young told the homeowner that a woman had tried to steal money and then returned to the front of the house, he bent to tie his shoe as a group exited the door; one man drew a handgun and fired, striking Young in the head and neck before fleeing in a car. Location data from the suspect’s phone placed him at the scene, and other forensic details—like blood on a witness’s shoes—were described in the complaint.
Within weeks, authorities arrested and charged Donta Jaboat Brown with two counts of second-degree murder in Young’s killing. The following year, a Hennepin County jury found Brown guilty on both counts after trial, confirming prosecutors’ account that the shooting was intentional but not premeditated. Sentencing followed that summer.
