On a cold November afternoon in South Saint Paul, Minnesota, the life of 26-year-old Avontae Troy King, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On November 24, 2023, what began as a dispute over a bag of marijuana escalated into a fatal encounter that left a community in mourning and two young men facing murder charges. King, a father of two young boys, was shot in the chest on the 400 block of 3rd Avenue South just before 5 p.m.
and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The events of that day unfolded when Andrew Michael Fisher, 20, and Tre Manuel Iglesias, 22, visited King's residence. According to police reports, Fisher snatched a bag of marijuana and fled the home with Iglesias. King gave chase, and in the ensuing moments, Fisher turned and fired a single shot, striking King in the chest. A witness reported hearing someone yell, "Shoot him!" just before the fatal shot was fired. King was unarmed. The two suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle. The gravity of the situation was amplified by the revelation that King's four-year-old son witnessed the shooting.
In the days following the shooting, both Andrew Michael Fisher of Cambridge and Tre Manuel Iglesias of St. Paul were arrested and charged with second-degree intentional murder and second-degree unintentional murder. The investigation was aided by Iglesias, who turned himself in to the police and provided a statement about his and Fisher's involvement.
Ultimately, Andrew Fisher pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder and in August 2024 was sentenced to over 12 years in prison for his role as the shooter. Tre Manuel Iglesias also pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting unintentional second-degree murder and in September 2025 was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison.
