Michael Schille, a 72-year-old White male, was found shot to death on the evening of April 11, 2025, inside his South St. Paul apartment at 707 12th Avenue North, Apartment 10. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death a homicide and identified the cause as a gunshot wound to the head. He died at the scene.
Police were dispatched just before 8:50 p.m. after a 911 caller reported the shooting. According to charging documents, the caller—36-year-old Jacob John
Audie—told dispatchers he had shot his roommate. Officers arrived and took Audie into custody at the apartment. Authorities said early on that the incident did not appear random and that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Investigators later alleged that the weapon used was Schille’s own AR-15 rifle and that Audie had been living with and caring for him. Within days, prosecutors charged Audie with second-degree intentional murder. News reports and county statements describe Audie as a caretaker or live-in aide for Schille at the time of the shooting.
In September 2025, a Dakota County grand jury returned an indictment elevating the case: Audie was charged with first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree intentional murder. He remained in custody at the Dakota County Jail, with court proceedings continuing into the fall.
Schille’s death marked South St. Paul’s first homicide investigation of 2025. Separate notices and obituary records confirmed his identity and age, and noted that he had longstanding ties to the South St. Paul community.
