In the early morning hours of April 3, 2024, the life of 41-year-old Robert James Brown, a Black/African American man, was tragically cut short in the Frogtown neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The incident unfolded around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Lafond Avenue and Grotto Street North, where a chaotic scene of gunshots, screaming, and speeding cars prompted multiple 911 calls.
When police arrived, they did not find a victim at the location.
A subsequent call to 911 informed authorities that Brown was being transported to Regions Hospital in a private vehicle. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and, despite medical efforts, was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his identity. His death marked the seventh homicide in St. Paul for the year 2024.
Described by his long-term partner as a devoted father and a family man, Brown was known for his love of coaching both football and basketball, which evolved into lifelong mentorships for many of the children he coached. He is remembered by friends and family as a funny, down-to-earth, and kind individual who loved mentoring kids.
As of late April 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with the fatal shooting, and no suspects had been publicly identified. The Saint Paul Police Department has been actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and has urged anyone with information to come forward, believing that there are witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police. While investigators have released few details, they have indicated that they do not believe the shooting was a random act. The investigation remains ongoing as his family seeks justice for his untimely death.
