On May 30, 2024, Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell, 36, was fatally shot in the line of duty while responding to a shooting incident in the Whittier neighborhood. Officer Mitchell, who had been with the department since 2022, was a father, son, and fiancé.
