On September 24, 2024, Jennifer Holmboe, a 46-year-old White / Caucasian woman from St. Cloud, Minnesota, was found dead in a home in Becker. Sherburne County deputies discovered her body, along with that of her 80-year-old father, Bruce Holmboe, at a residence on 67th Street Southeast. The investigation into the deaths concluded that Jennifer Holmboe was the victim of a homicide.
The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office determined that Bruce Holmboe shot his daughter with a shotgun before
turning the weapon on himself in a murder-suicide. The decaying bodies of both father and daughter were found in the home, with the shotgun lying near Bruce Holmboe. Medical records indicated that he was suffering from dementia and was in the early stages of possible Alzheimer's disease. Reports suggest that Jennifer had been exploring the option of placing her father in a care facility, concerned that he might be a danger to himself.
Investigators learned of potential friction between the two in the time leading up to the tragic event. Jennifer was allegedly considering selling her father's cabin and had recently made changes to his trust. A family friend, who had previously expressed concerns about elder abuse to Bruce Holmboe, received a voicemail from him on September 12, the date of Jennifer's last Facebook post. In the voicemail, Bruce reportedly said, “You were right about Jennifer all along,” while Jennifer could be heard in the background saying, “What are you telling everyone − I'm moving out.” The message then ended abruptly. While authorities investigated other potential suspects, tracking their cell phones, they were not found to have been near the house around the time of the deaths. A combined memorial service for Jennifer, along with her parents Bruce and Lois Holmboe, was held on October 10, 2024.
