On July 7, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Labette County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported shooting at the residence of 74-year-old Thaine Lee Anderson in Cherryvale, Kansas. Upon arrival, officers discovered Anderson had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Shortly thereafter, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) was called in to assist with the case.
