In the early morning hours of January 23, 2024, a burst of gunfire in a north Wichita neighborhood claimed the life of 20-year-old Joshua Batemon and left another teenager critically injured. The incident, which unfolded around 1:59 a.m. in the 1500 block of North Poplar, is believed to have been the tragic culmination of a road rage dispute that had taken place hours earlier.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Batemon with a fatal gunshot wound to his upper body.
Despite the immediate response from emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old male who was with Batemon was also shot and was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
