In the late hours of a Wednesday in Parsons, Kansas, the life of 53-year-old Maurice Todd "Moe" Harper, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On July 17, 2024, what began as an ordinary evening ended in a burst of violence that would leave one man dead and another wounded.
Police were initially called to the 2300 block of Appleton around 11 p.m. for a report of a man bleeding.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Tylor Abshere lying in the street with what appeared to be gunshot or knife wounds. As an officer began to render aid, a man later identified as Michael Christopher Morales, 48, emerged from behind a tree, armed with a gun, and admitted to the shooting.
The officer was able to de-escalate the situation and persuade Morales to drop his weapon. However, as police attempted to take him into custody, Morales tried to flee but was quickly apprehended with the use of a Taser. Once the scene was secured, officers were directed to a nearby residence where they found a second victim, Maurice Harper, who had also been shot.
Both Harper and Abshere were rushed to the Emergency Department at Labette Health for medical treatment. While Abshere was later transported to another hospital, Harper succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead while receiving medical care.
Michael Christopher Morales was taken into custody and is facing a litany of charges, including Murder in the 1st Degree, Attempted Murder in the 1st Degree, Aggravated Battery, and Interference with Law Enforcement. In the subsequent investigation, detectives recovered nine. 380 caliber shell casings from the living room of Morales' home. While Morales claimed self-defense, a judge has ordered him to stand trial for the murder of Maurice Harper and the wounding of Tylor Abshere.
