In the winter of 2023, the life of 19-year-old Danthony Johnson was abruptly cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded in a Shreveport, Louisiana, Goodwill store parking lot. On the afternoon of February 7th, Johnson was the victim of a drive-by shooting, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Ochsner LSU Health Medical Center, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead less than an hour after the attack.
The incident marked the seventh homicide in Shreveport for that year.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw a swift police response. A yellow Camaro, believed to be the vehicle involved in the drive-by, was spotted later in another part of the city. This led to a high-speed chase as the suspect vehicle fled from law enforcement, eventually crossing into Bossier City. The pursuit came to a dramatic end when the driver turned onto Benton Road, where more shots were reportedly fired before the Camaro crashed into a pole.
Surrounded by officers from the Shreveport and Bossier City Police Departments, as well as Louisiana State Police, two individuals who were inside the vehicle were taken into custody. In the wake of the teenager's death, Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux released a statement expressing his condolences to Johnson's family and friends. He condemned the senseless violence, stating, 'Danthony Johnson should have had a long life and a chance at a decent future. People who do not value human life cut his life short.' He affirmed the city's commitment to bringing those responsible for the murder to justice.
