In the quiet community of New Iberia, Louisiana, a young man’s life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. SheMarr Louis “Shep” Sheppard, a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot in early October 2023. The incident that led to his untimely death unfolded at a local convenience store, forever altering the lives of his family and friends.
On that fateful evening, while SheMarr was inside the Amigos MiniMart, a vehicle pulled up outside.
An individual exited the car and attempted to steal SheMarr's vehicle. When SheMarr went outside to confront the person, another occupant of the suspect vehicle opened fire, striking him. The suspects then fled the scene, leaving SheMarr with fatal injuries.
The New Iberia Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the homicide. Within days, their efforts, aided by tips from the community, led to a significant breakthrough in the case. Investigators were able to positively identify the individual who fired the fatal shots. On October 5, 2023, a juvenile was taken into custody in connection with the murder of SheMarr Sheppard.
The juvenile suspect faces serious charges, including one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder. Following the arrest, the underage individual was placed in a detention facility. The stolen vehicle involved in the incident was later found abandoned just a few blocks from the scene of the crime. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events of that tragic night.
