Haleei A. Newton, an 18-year-old female, had just graduated from Ruston High School, a milestone celebrated by her family a mere 75 hours before her life was tragically cut short. In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 25, 2024, shortly after midnight, Newton was driving eastbound on Interstate 20 in Ruston, Louisiana, with a male friend. They were returning from an event in Arcadia when another vehicle pulled alongside her 2009 Kia and unleashed a volley of gunfire.
A patrol
officer in the vicinity heard the shots ring out. One of the bullets penetrated the trunk of Newton's car, striking her in the back and inflicting a fatal wound. Her male passenger was unharmed and managed to steer the vehicle to the side of the road. When law enforcement arrived, they found Newton unresponsive. Despite being rushed to Northern Louisiana Medical Center, she succumbed to her injuries. The initial investigation left police searching for clues and a motive, with the police chief stating it was unlikely she was a random victim, though no immediate altercation seemed to have precipitated the shooting.
After a meticulous four-month investigation, the Ruston Police Department made a significant breakthrough. On September 26, 2024, they arrested three individuals in connection with the drive-by shooting. The suspects were identified as 19-year-old Earnest G. Chatman of Simsboro, 19-year-old Jamion T. James of Grambling, and 18-year-old Emmanuel M. Seals, Jr. of Ruston. Investigators determined that the shooting likely stemmed from an argument that had occurred at the party Newton had attended in Arcadia. It is believed that Haleei Newton was not the intended target of the attack, but rather an innocent casualty caught in the aftermath of the dispute.
All three men were booked at the Lincoln Parish Detention Center and face serious charges, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and obstruction of justice. At the time of his arrest for the murder, Earnest G. Chatman was already in custody on unrelated drug and gun charges. Bail for each of the suspects was set at $1.9 million. The three men later pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. The case remains under investigation as the community continues to mourn the loss of a young woman who was remembered for her vibrant and joyful personality.
