In the quiet town of Maringouin, Louisiana, the community was unsettled by the discovery of Herman Harris, a 65-year-old man, found deceased in his home in late August. A concerned individual, checking on him after he missed an appointment, found him unresponsive and immediately alerted the authorities. Upon their arrival, Iberville Parish Sheriff's deputies determined that Harris had been shot once, and they began investigating his death as a homicide.
The initial stages of the investigation pointed towards a sinister plot, with authorities believing this was a carefully orchestrated murder-for-hire.
As investigators delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding Harris's death, a complex and disturbing picture began to emerge. The investigation led them to identify four individuals as suspects in the elaborate scheme. Siblings Rilonda Brooks, 44, and David Brooks Jr., 40, both from Maringouin, were implicated in arranging the murder. They were subsequently arrested and faced a slew of charges, including second-degree murder, solicitation for murder, criminal conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. The investigation didn't stop there, as it was revealed that the siblings were also involved in other criminal activities, leading to additional charges of racketeering and witness intimidation.
The search for the hired assailants extended beyond Louisiana. Johnnie Hicks, a 25-year-old with an extensive criminal history who had recently been released from prison, was identified as one of the individuals hired to carry out the murder. He was apprehended in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and faced charges of second-degree murder, solicitation for murder, criminal conspiracy, aggravated burglary, obstruction of justice, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A fourth suspect, Javadda Lewis of Mississippi, was also identified as being involved. While the other three suspects were taken into custody, Lewis remained at large, with law enforcement seeking the public's help in locating him.
