In the early morning hours in the quiet community of Gray, Kentucky, a violent altercation tragically cut short the life of Shelby McIntyre. On April 13, 2023, the 43-year-old woman was at a residence on Dr. Parker Lane when a dispute erupted. During the course of the argument, Brian Smith, a 40-year-old man also from Gray, allegedly brandished a firearm.
According to a witness at the scene, Smith was engaged in a heated argument with another woman at the residence and dared anyone to intervene. When McIntyre said something in response, Smith is reported to have shot her in the head, leading to her immediate death. The incident occurred just before 5 a.m., shattering the morning's calm and leaving a scene of violence for first responders to discover. After the shooting, Smith fled the location, prompting a manhunt by the Kentucky State Police.
Law enforcement considered Smith to be armed and dangerous and sought public assistance in locating him. For much of the day, he managed to evade capture. Later that afternoon, authorities were able to establish contact with Smith by phone. After negotiations, he agreed to surrender and was taken into custody on KY-830, near the border of Knox and Laurel counties. Smith was subsequently charged with murder and lodged in the Knox County Detention Center under a $250,000 cash bond.
