In the late afternoon of September 27, 2023, the quiet of a rural neighborhood in southern Graves County, Kentucky, was shattered by a fatal shooting. Mariah Warren, a 56-year-old woman, was found deceased in the yard of a residence on Hopkins Cemetery Road, located between the areas of Wingo and Water Valley. She had sustained an apparent shotgun wound.
The initial call to the Graves County Sheriff's office at 5:49 PM reported that a male had shot a female, and the first deputy arrived on the scene within a mere two minutes.
The investigation that followed led to the arrest of a 15-year-old male, a neighbor of Warren. The teenager was subsequently charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence. During interviews with investigators, the juvenile stated that Warren was on the property, was not welcome, and had been asked to leave. He claimed that when she refused to depart, he retrieved a shotgun, loaded it, and pointed it at her. The juvenile alleged that the shooting was unintentional. He also informed investigators that Warren had previously tried to enter the back of the residence.
