On a Monday afternoon, March 20, 2023, the life of 34-year-old Justin Breitung was tragically cut short in Springfield, Massachusetts. A White / Caucasian male, Breitung was fatally shot near Belmont Avenue around 4 p.m. First responders arrived at the scene and transported him to Baystate Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Justin, who was born in Watertown, Massachusetts, was a devoted husband and a loving father to two daughters.
He worked as a landscaper for New England Landscaping and was known for his love of the outdoors, which he expressed through camping and hiking. He also had a deep interest in martial arts, spirituality, and Native American culture. His unexpected death left a significant void in the lives of his family and friends.
In the days that followed the shooting, Springfield police made two arrests in connection with Breitung's death. On March 24, 2023, authorities apprehended 32-year-old Christina Guzman and a male suspect, Rafael Calo. Guzman was charged with murder and intimidation of a witness. Calo faced charges of murder, carrying a large-capacity firearm on a public way, firearm violations with two prior violent crimes, and possession of a high-capacity magazine. At the time of his arrest, Calo was found in possession of a large-capacity pistol.
Information that has surfaced suggests a possible motive for the tragic event may have stemmed from a dispute related to the children of both Breitung and the suspects. It has been reported that Breitung's daughter had allegedly been bullied by the suspects' child at school, leading to the fatal confrontation.
