In the early morning hours of July 4, 2023, the life of 30-year-old Tatiana Tavares, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short in what authorities have described as an apparent murder-suicide in Raynham, Massachusetts. Around 2:00 a.m., Raynham police received distressing 911 calls from both Tavares and another tenant at the Ruth Ellen Road home, reporting a shooting.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene in an upstairs bedroom.
Tavares was found deceased, having been shot in the chest while lying in her bed. Alongside her was the body of 43-year-old Scott Swale of Easton, who authorities identified as the shooter. The preliminary investigation suggests that Swale forcibly entered the residence by shattering a sliding glass door before proceeding upstairs to confront Tavares. After shooting her, Swale appears to have taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into the incident revealed that Tavares and Swale had been involved in what was described as a "hostile year-long on-again, off-again relationship." Friends and family remembered Tavares as a kind and loving person with a beautiful heart, who was true to herself. Her death left behind her three children, who are now without their mother. In the wake of the tragedy, a vigil was held to honor her memory and to raise awareness about the devastating impact of domestic violence.
