Danasia Greene, a 27-year-old Black / African American woman from Cambridge, Massachusetts, was known to some by the nickname “Bella.” She lived in the city’s North Point neighborhood and was familiar to people who spent time in Central Square. In the early hours of Thanksgiving morning, her life was cut short by gunfire.
Just after 12:30 a.m. on November 23, 2023, Cambridge Police responded to reports of a shooting in the area of 10 Magazine Street in a bustling Central Square.
Officers found Danasia Greene and a 26-year-old Boston man suffering from gunshot wounds near a black Tesla that was stopped in the road. Greene had been shot multiple times outside the Central Square Church. Both victims were rushed to a Boston hospital, where Greene was pronounced dead about an hour and a half later. The male victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently released.
The investigation was handled by the Cambridge Police, Massachusetts State Police, and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. In the days following the shooting, a memorial of cards, candles, and flowers grew on the church steps where Greene was found. At a community meeting in December 2023, the district attorney stated that investigators believed the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between people who knew each other.
The man who was injured in the shooting was identified as Tyrre Herring. He was arrested while at the hospital on outstanding warrants for charges that were unrelated to the shooting. Court and police records have confirmed there was no known connection between Herring and Greene. The domestic violence charges against Herring were later dismissed in Cambridge District Court in 2024.
As of May 2024, Danasia Greene's homicide remains unsolved. No suspects have been publicly identified or charged in her death.
