In the quiet community of Haverhill, Massachusetts, the life of 24-year-old Loren E. Marino was tragically cut short on Sunday, March 3, 2024. A mental healthcare professional, Loren was remembered as a beautiful and strong young woman whose vibrant spirit could light up any room. Those who knew her described her as the life of the party, someone who loved to dance, sing, and cook, but above all, cherished her family and friends. Originally from Lowell, Massachusetts, she had moved to Haverhill two years prior after residing in East Providence, Rhode Island.
On that Sunday evening, Haverhill Police were dispatched to Loren's residence on Broadway for a well-being check. Upon entering the home, officers discovered a grim scene. Loren and a man, later identified as 24-year-old Austin Amaral of North Providence, Rhode Island, were both found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. The Essex County District Attorney's office later confirmed that the two were in a dating relationship and that the deaths were the result of an apparent murder-suicide.
The preliminary investigation led authorities to believe that Austin Amaral was the suspect in Loren's death. Investigators suspect that Amaral fatally shot Marino before turning the gun on himself. While the official investigation by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office and the Haverhill Police Department remains active and ongoing, no further suspects are being sought.
In the wake of this tragedy, friends of Loren have come forward, painting a troubling picture of her relationship with Amaral. According to a close friend, the couple had only been seriously dating for about two months. This friend described Amaral's behavior as obsessive, stating that he "kind of came and never left" and did not want Loren to have a relationship with anyone else. The friend also recounted an incident a month prior where Amaral had shown her two guns and another occasion where he had allegedly shoved Loren into a dresser. In what appeared to be an attempt to isolate her, Amaral allegedly blocked the friend from Loren's social media accounts and phone while she was asleep.
