In the spring of 2023, the quiet of the Bluegrass Fish and Wildlife Area in northwestern Warrick County, Indiana, was broken by a grim discovery. On the morning of Saturday, April 22nd, a passerby stumbled upon the body of a young man, later identified as 27-year-old Manuel Eduardo Heaton of Evansville. The discovery, made near the Scaup Pit in the vicinity of St.
Johns and Kansas Roads, immediately launched a homicide investigation led by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division and the Warrick County Sheriff's Office.
Heaton, a Hispanic male, was found to have died from gunshot wounds. His car was located nearby, but his personal belongings, including his cellphone and a handgun, were missing, suggesting that robbery may have been a motive. The investigation quickly focused on a person of interest, and just three days after Heaton's body was found, an arrest was made. Forty-year-old Johnathon Buza, also from Evansville, was taken into custody and charged with murder, felony murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
As investigators delved deeper into the case, a picture of the relationship between Heaton and his alleged killer began to emerge. It was revealed that the two men were acquainted and had reportedly been friends at one point. In the hours leading up to the discovery of Heaton's body, the two had gone on an overnight fishing trip to the very wildlife area where his life would tragically end. A crucial piece of evidence came from tracking Heaton's stolen cellphone, which investigators were able to trace to a location near Buza's residence in Evansville.
The case against Johnathon Buza moved through the legal system, and by the summer of 2025, he was set to stand trial for the murder of Manuel Eduardo Heaton. With the trial commencing on July 22, 2025, prosecutors announced their intention to seek a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if Buza were to be convicted of the charges brought against him. Buza was being held in the Warrick County Jail as he awaited the outcome of the legal proceedings that would determine his fate.
