In the late spring of 2024, the life of Sabrina Michelle Lieb Smith, a 30-year-old White/Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in her Goshen, Indiana, residence. On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, what began as a response to a reported shooting escalated into a tense police standoff that would end in the discovery of two lives lost.
That day, law enforcement was dispatched to a home on Huron Street following reports of a woman who had been shot.
Upon their arrival, they found a volatile situation with a man, identified as 36-year-old Elisha Smith, armed with a gun inside the residence along with two young children. The Elkhart County SWAT team was called to the scene and was able to safely remove the children from the home.
For hours, negotiators attempted to make contact with Elisha Smith, but their efforts were met with silence. After a gunshot was heard from within the house shortly after midnight, the SWAT team breached the home. Inside, they discovered the bodies of both Sabrina Michelle Lieb Smith and Elisha Smith. Sabrina had sustained fatal gunshot wounds earlier in the evening, and Elisha appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Elkhart Homicide unit is continuing to investigate the incident as a murder-suicide. It has been reported that no charges are expected to be filed in connection with the standoff.
