On January 1, 2023, Austin McAllister, a 38-year-old Army veteran and father of six, was fatally shot while working as a bouncer at the Lyon's Den Hookah Lounge in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when a man attempted to forcibly enter the establishment with a firearm. An exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in McAllister being struck multiple times. He was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
