On February 19, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred on the I-57 expressway near 116th Street in the Morgan Park neighborhood of Chicago's South Side. The incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including 1-year-old A-mara Hall.
A-mara Hall was traveling in a vehicle with her family when the car was shot at around 10:30 p.m. The vehicle, which was riddled with bullets, left the highway and stopped near the top of the 111th Street exit ramp.
Two people, identified as Nasir Hall, 19, and William Smith, 13, were found dead at the scene. A-mara Hall, who was Nasir Hall's daughter, was among the four individuals taken to a local hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
The victims were identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Nasir Hall, William Smith, and A-mara Hall. William Smith was an eighth-grader at the Montessori School of Englewood and was related to the other two victims. The shooting also injured three other people, including the driver and two other juveniles, who were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
Following an extensive investigation, Sean Richardson, a 20-year-old Chicago man, was identified as the suspect in the shooting. Richardson was initially taken into custody on August 19, 2024, on unrelated charges. He was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the I-57 expressway shooting.
Richardson is currently being held at the Cook County Jail as he awaits his first court appearance. The community, particularly the Montessori School of Englewood, has been deeply affected by the loss of William Smith and the other victims, with students and staff holding memorial services to honor their memory.
