On June 17, 2023, a tragic incident occurred on the West Side of Chicago, specifically in the neighborhood known as The Fifth City or near Garfield Park. Timothy Lockhart, a 14-year-old rapper known by his stage name Lil Tuda, and his 15-year-old brother, Jaylan Lockhart, were fatally shot.
The shooting took place around 4:45 pm in the 100 block of South Holman (or Homan) Avenue.
When officers responded to the report of a person shot, they found the two brothers, both of whom had been shot. Timothy was hit multiple times, while Jaylan suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Both were rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. Timothy succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, while Jaylan died days later from his wounds.
Timothy Lockhart was allegedly a member of the Dirty Money Gang, a street organization believed to be affiliated with the Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stones.
The incident was part of a particularly violent weekend in Chicago, where at least 75 people were shot and 14 were killed. The Harrison police district, where the brothers were shot, was noted as the most violent and deadliest area in the city during that weekend.
As of the latest reports, there have been no arrests made in connection with the shooting, and police continue to investigate. Chicago activist Andrew Holmes, who was in close contact with the family, emphasized the family's desire for justice and the devastating impact of the loss on the mother, who had carried and nurtured her children.
Interim police Supt. Fred Waller attributed much of the violence in the district to drugs and rival gangs, indicating that the police department was planning to reformat some of their strategies in the area, though specific details were not provided.
