On July 3, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Belleville, Illinois, resulting in the death of 10-year-old Brandon E. Scott. Brandon was shot while inside his residence in the 1800 block of Roosevelt Avenue in unincorporated Belleville. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene at approximately 9:56 PM and found Brandon, who was subsequently taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Brandon's death was led by the Major Case Squad, with MSgt. Shane Brown of the Belleville Police Department serving as the commander. Capt. Michael Mojzis of the O’Fallon Police Department and Inv. Ben Vise of the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department were also involved in the investigation.
As a result of the investigation, two suspects were identified and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Brandon's death. Devin M. Dunbar, 26, and Jaylen P. Nicks, 26, were arrested and charged. It was determined that the suspects had a connection with an acquaintance of the victim's family and were aware of the location they were targeting.
The community was deeply affected by Brandon's death, with family, friends, and neighbors mourning his loss. A GoFundMe fundraiser was initiated to help cover the costs of his funeral. The Major Case Squad emphasized the senseless nature of the crime, stating that Brandon "lost the opportunity to live out a prosperous life due to the senseless acts of those who were charged in this investigation".
Both suspects were issued substantial bonds: Devin Dunbar's bond was set at $1,250,000, and Jaylen Nicks' bond was set at $1,000,000. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address and solve violent crimes in the community.
