On July 5, 2023, a violent incident occurred during a 4th of July gathering in the West Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Tyrone Moore. The event turned chaotic when a barrage of bullets was fired, with police estimating that at least 200 shots were fired at the scene. Moore was shot in the chest and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's
office.
The shooting occurred in the pre-dawn hours, around 5 a.m., at a gathering near the intersection of 56th and Ada streets. In addition to Moore's death, five other people were injured by gunfire. A 27-year-old man was shot in the leg, a 21-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to her thigh, a 23-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and was in critical condition, and a 29-year-old man was shot in his left foot and leg. Another individual, a 21-year-old man, was critically injured after being beaten.
The crime scene was extensive, covering close to three blocks, and included remnants of the holiday gathering such as paper plates, food, bottles, and cans. Police recovered 187 rounds of ammunition from the scene and were investigating whether the shots were fired from outside the gathering or by someone within the group. At the time of the report, no one was in custody, and Area 1 detectives were handling the investigation.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with one witness, Samantha Hudson, recounting seeing many people hurt and shot. The gathering had started peacefully, with crowds in the streets and fireworks in the air, but it quickly descended into chaos when the gunshots began. Another witness, Jordan, who was at the scene, expressed her concern for the people who were shot and her regret for attending the event.
