On October 22, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., 19-year-old Marshon Martin of East St. Louis, Illinois, was fatally shot in a vacant parking lot in the 500 block of Missouri Avenue. Responding officers from the East St. Louis Police Department pronounced Martin dead at the scene. Two other individuals sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The East St.
Louis Police Department sought assistance from the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation's Public Safety Enforcement Group to investigate the incident. Following a comprehensive investigation, authorities identified 37-year-old Travione M. Willis of Belleville, Illinois, as the suspect. On December 4, 2023, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney charged Willis with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.
On December 19, 2023, the United States Marshals Service apprehended Willis in Belleville. He is currently detained at the St. Clair County Jail awaiting trial. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing.
