Dr. Antoinette Bonnie Candia-Bailey, a prominent academic administrator, passed away on January 8, 2024, at the age of 49 in Plainfield, Illinois. Her death was a result of suicide, which occurred just five days after she received a termination letter from her position as the vice president for student affairs at Lincoln University of Missouri, a role she had assumed on May 1, 2023.
Prior to her death, Dr. Candia-Bailey sent an email to Lincoln University President Dr. John B.
Moseley, alleging that she had been subjected to months of harassment, bullying, and racial discrimination. Despite these allegations, an investigative board later cleared President Moseley and the university of any wrongdoing or misconduct related to her death.
Dr. Candia-Bailey's death sparked significant reactions, including protests on the Lincoln University campus and a renewed national discussion on the treatment of Black women in higher education. Her passing highlighted the ongoing issues of mental health, workplace pressures, and the challenges faced by Black women in academic and administrative roles.
Dr. Candia-Bailey had a distinguished career in higher education, with roles at several institutions including North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Towson University, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Elms College. She was known for her advocacy in social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and her research focused on the advancement of African American women into senior-level administrative positions.
Her legacy includes her extensive work in supporting students and advocating for social justice and change. Dr. Candia-Bailey was remembered by her colleagues and friends as a passionate and dedicated individual who touched many lives through her work and personal interactions.
