On March 24, 2024, at approximately 3:30 PM, 27-year-old Luis A. Ramirez of East Chicago, Indiana, was fatally shot. East Chicago officers responded to a call at 1021 W. 145th Street, where they found an unresponsive Hispanic male bleeding from the head on the sidewalk.
The investigation, led by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Lake County Sheriff Department CSI, resulted in the identification of Christian Reyes Maldonado as a suspect.
Maldonado was taken into custody just two blocks away from the crime scene near 145th and Northcote. Witnesses and security cameras captured Maldonado fleeing the scene, and he was eventually apprehended after attempting to run into his residence. Police surrounded the residence, and Maldonado surrendered. A search warrant was executed, leading to the discovery of a gun, clothes matching the descriptions provided by witnesses, and bags of cocaine individually packaged.
Maldonado was subsequently charged with several felonies, including murder with an enhancement for using a handgun, dealing in cocaine, and unlawful carrying of a handgun. Additional charges included unlawful carrying of a handgun as a previous convicted felon and a misdemeanor charge for unlawful carrying of a handgun.
Luis Ramirez, born on November 4, 1996, is survived by his children, Sienna and Aurelius, with their mother Alexandra Rosales; his girlfriend Emily Gonzalez; his parents, Cristina Ramirez and Anthony Patrick Rivera; his stepfather Juan Arredondo; and several siblings, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was known for his caring heart, infectious laugh, and dedication to his family. Ramirez was particularly close to his children and spent much of his time with them and his dog, Scruffles. He also enjoyed fixing up cars with his uncle and supporting his family in various ways.
Funeral services for Luis Ramirez were held at Fife Funeral Home in East Chicago, with visitation on April 2, 2024, and burial services on April 3, 2024, at Elmwood Cemetery in Hammond, Indiana.
